Is ASTM A53 pipe seamless? Check the type before ordering

Product documentationBy Compliance BD Ltd.2 min read

ASTM A53 does not mean seamless on its own. Identify the pipe type, grade, size and required documentation when preparing a fire protection pipe enquiry.

Does A53 always mean seamless pipe?

No. ASTM A53 covers different pipe manufacturing types. Type S identifies seamless pipe, while Type E identifies electric-resistance-welded pipe. The words ASTM A53 alone do not establish which construction is being offered.

Wheatland’s manufacturer documents distinguish A53 types and describe its Type E pipe as ERW. When a project specifies seamless construction, make that requirement explicit in the equipment schedule and supplier proposal instead of relying on a general standard reference.

Which dimensions and material details should you specify?

State the required type, grade, nominal size and wall thickness or schedule from the project documents. Include the specified end preparation, finish and connection method. Ask the engineer to resolve any inconsistency between the BOQ and drawings before procurement.

Nominal size does not by itself describe every physical dimension. Use the applicable pipe and fitting documents to coordinate the assembly. Record the proposed manufacturer and product identification so accepted materials can be checked at delivery.

  • Quantities, lengths and delivery requirements

Does an ASTM reference establish UL listing?

A material specification and a product listing answer different questions. An ASTM reference does not by itself establish UL listing or FM approval for a fire protection application. Where certification is specified, obtain evidence covering the exact offered product.

Ask which mill or material records and other documents are required for the submittal. Keep those requirements separate from certification checks so a material report is not mistaken for a listing document. Compare the supplied markings and paperwork against the accepted proposal.

Compliance BD can discuss pipe and fitting requirements alongside a hydrant or sprinkler project. Send the BOQ, drawings, required documents and delivery location to the team. Specify whether the work includes material supply, fabrication, installation or testing.

For an existing system, include the available material records and connection details before asking about a replacement. Any proposed substitution should be reviewed against the project requirements. Confirm the accepted material and scope in writing before ordering.
