What is a fire safety plan? A project guide for Bangladesh

Project planningBy Compliance BD Ltd.2 min read

A fire safety plan connects the building, its fire protection measures and the people responsible for emergency actions. Start with clear drawings, responsibilities and site information.

What is the fire safety plan for a building?

A fire safety plan records how fire risks, protective measures and emergency arrangements are addressed for a particular building. Its engineering documents and operational procedures should refer to the same facility and current use. The precise deliverables depend on the project and the reviewing authority.

An evacuation map is one part of communicating an emergency plan. It does not replace the system drawings, responsibilities and procedures needed for the facility. Start an enquiry by identifying whether you need design drawings, an existing-building assessment, an operational plan or submission support.

What should an emergency action plan explain?

A useful emergency plan explains how people report an emergency, which evacuation arrangements apply, how occupants are accounted for and who is responsible for coordination. Any assigned critical-operation, rescue or medical duties require appropriate arrangements and training.

OSHA’s emergency action plan guidance provides a useful reference for these organisational topics. It is US guidance, not a statement of Bangladesh approval requirements. Your project team must confirm the local requirements and responsibilities for the specific facility.

  • Reporting and alarm arrangements
  • Evacuation routes and assembly arrangements
  • Responsibilities, assistance arrangements and accountability
  • Staff briefing, drills and a process to update the plan

What drawings and site information should you prepare?

Share floor plans, building use, occupancy information and existing fire safety records with the project team. Identify changes to layouts, production areas or storage since the earlier drawings were prepared. Mark the systems already installed and the gaps you want assessed.

For a Bangladesh project, ask which BNBC, Fire Service and other applicable requirements the proposed scope addresses. Agree who prepares and checks the documents, who submits them where required and who responds to review comments. A consultant’s quotation is not an approval document.

How can Compliance BD support the project?

Compliance BD’s service range includes design and drawing, supply, installation, testing, commissioning and maintenance. Our Dhaka and Chattogram offices can discuss the records available for your site and define the required engineering and implementation work.

Request a proposal with named deliverables, exclusions and handover records. For an operating facility, include how work will be coordinated with site management. After changes to the building or systems, assign responsibility for keeping the relevant plans and staff information current.
